Erykah Badu – New Amerykah Part Two Return of Ankh / Motown

June 2010

Erykah Badu has come out with the answer to New Amerykah Pt. 1: 4th World War with this composition.

“Window Seat” is a funky, bouncy tune. She wants her love to come back her. She says that her “love” is so demanding that she needs to get out of town so she can have time, for herself, to think things out. With her “journey” she wants that person to understand, love, need and appreciate her. She repeats the chorus, “come back, come back to me; come back.”

“Turn Me Away” a funky R&B tune that flows. She wants money or as it’s spelled “munny”. She wants to stay with her love, because that’s the feeling that person has for her. She wants the person back. She’ll cook and do everything to keep you but I want to get munny. You can interpret the song what “munny” really means.

“Gone Baby, Don’t Be Long” is where Badu doesn’t want her love to be away too long but understands that they have to “get their hustle on”. Wondering if she misses the person or the intimacy. The verses and chorus repeats throughout the whole song, all most like the old R&B love songs where the group repeats the chorus for minutes.

“Umm Hmm” to sum it up, she can’t wait for you to show your “feelings”. She says that you can’t hide from her, can’t get away because you are made for her and her feelings are just as strong for you. The song has a strange ending.

“Love” has a beginning one would associate with the Funkadelic. It has that kind of bounce to it. Don’t know about the lyrics but the beat will get people up on their feet and move. Definitely has the old 70’s funk beat. Suddenly, in the middle, the beat gets a little softer but still has that dance groove.

“Fall In Love” (Your Funeral) samples “Intimate Friends” by Eddie Kendricks. Can’t play OTA (On The Air) because of her liberal use of s—t would. She mostly say that this person doesn’t want to “fall in love” with her. These lyrics repeat throughout the whole song, as if she couldn’t come up with any more lyrics. Again, if you want to dance, you’ll be groovin’ to the beat; the words…eh; just like “Intimate Friend”.

:Incense” f/ Kirsten Agnesta, an interesting tune. It’s instrumental for half of the song then Kirsten, I guess it’s Kirsten, reads something in a foreign language. Don’t know what’s said.

“Out My Mind, Just In Time” Piano solo. Badu talks about her lover are looking for another though she’ll do everything for you. Cook, clean, lie, cry, hate, sew, etc. She’s recovering from losing her love; then says, “She must be a fool for you”. Now, the tempo changes to an offbeat piano, drum accompaniment. The song covers love, the “holy ghost”, seems she’ll just rambling about what’s going on in her mind. This tune is 10:22 long, available on the album ONLY!! It’s “Interesting” listening, almost something Clinton and the gang would do, like “Good News, Bad News”, from “Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On”. There are more songs and 2 interludes, one isn’t bad, about 1:20 the other, well. If you’re a Badu fan, you’ll love this CD. If not…

Just remember, it is my opinion. Give it a listen then, make your decision.

MUSIC REVIEW

CORINNE BAILEY RAE – THE SEA / CAPITOL

June 2010

It has taken a few years and the tragedy of the sudden death of her husband, for Corinne Bailey Rae to release a new CD, into the world. Its name is “The Sea” and has different topics and emotions as the sea has creatures. Its tempo varies; you can feel what’s going on in her mind.

“Are You Here” starts slow and builds up and asks the question if you are still here. You can feel that she has lost an important part of her but feels the aura, of that person, in her heart. After hitting a crescendo, the tempo returns to a slow lament.

X “I’d Do It All Again” she tells about the feeling of love is bigger than many know, sometimes uncontrollable. Her exclamation is “having someone to love is bigger than your heart” but, she would go through it again because the feeling is so overwhelming, the warmth just takes over.

“Feels Like the First Time” an up-tempo tune talks about the feeling of love for the first time, no matter how long it has been or if it’s a new love, it always feels like the first time she was kissed by her love; an overwhelming feeling takes over her emotions.

“Closer” a slow funky beat, Bailey Rae says that she doesn’t want to give the feelings of that certain person in her life. She tired of the ups and downs of love’s emotions, just stay close and keep the loving coming, that’s all she needs. She states, “All she wants to do is get close to you”.

“Love’s On Its Way”, talks about the anger and the attitudes, in the streets and interactions, where one doesn’t know what will happen day-to-day. Only the feeling of love can overcome these situations.

“Diving For Hearts” a song whose tempo changes from mellow to a hard rock feel and back but Bailey Rae’s emotions come out; should she continue to find a “heart” or does she let life go by. What’s right for her? Someone, something needs to reassure her that love is a good thing, a necessary emotion that keeps a person going, existing and fulfilled throughout life’s journey.

“The Sea”, the title track, is definitely a goodbye to her husband. “Change is everything” is what she realizes. “Saw your face in the faded light…it explained everything, it explained everything”. You can feel the hurt in her heart. “Goodbye, paradise. Goodbye, you’re so changed”. Written as if her love or a love has gotten involved with the wrong people and she has to give up on them. The “real” scenario, she has lost her true love because this has “taken everything from me”.

“The Sea” is an interesting CD, made to listen to more than dancing. It works on one’s emotions; make you thin k about your life’s experiences especially with love. As I stated earlier, you feel the hurt she has for her dead husband but it more like a celebration mixed with laments. She takes chances with songs, which is different from her last CD. Some may like it; some may not. It’s not R&B, Rock, Blues; it’s everything mixed with Corinne Bailey Rae’s emotions.

Just remember, it is my opinion. Give it a listen then, make your decision.
